Hail Damage Roof Repair in Utah

Most hail damage on a Utah roof can’t be seen from the driveway — bruised shingles and knocked-loose granules hide until someone actually walks the roof. Nearly all of it comes with the July–August monsoon storms. Rooval Roofing in Lehi inspects for free across 16 Wasatch Front cities, photographs what we find, and repairs it under a workmanship warranty. Call (385) 424-8810.

Wondering about price? If hail turns out to be the least of it and the whole roof is near the end of its life, here’s what a full replacement costs so you can compare.

We’re a local Lehi crew with a 5.0-star Google rating. You get a written estimate before any work starts — and if your roof took no real damage, we’ll tell you that and shake your hand.

What Hail Damage Looks Like on a Utah Roof

Hail damage to asphalt shingles is physical, not just cosmetic — and most of the real signs only show up close. Here’s what we check for on every slope.

Bruises and soft spots

A hailstone drives granules down into the asphalt mat and leaves a soft spot, like a bruise on an apple. You usually can’t see it from the ground at all — our inspectors find bruises by hand, pressing gently along each slope. A bruised shingle looks fine today and leaks later.

Granule loss

The classic mark is a round or oval spot with a dark center — bare asphalt where the granules got knocked away — ringed by loose granules. Check your gutters and downspout splash zones after a storm: piles of granules that look like coarse black sand are a strong hint the roof took hits.

Cracked shingle mat

Bigger stones, or repeated hits in the same spot, can crack the fiberglass mat inside the shingle. That’s functional damage — the waterproof layer itself is compromised. Industry research from IBHS suggests hail around 1 inch (quarter-size) is where visible impact marks generally start on standard shingles, with mat fracture more likely at 1.25 inches and up.

Dented soft metals

Vent caps, flashing, gutters, and downspouts dent easily and — unlike shingles — metal never weathers back. Dings in the soft metals are one of the most reliable markers of how big the hail was and how hard it hit, so we photograph them on every inspection.

Different roofs, different marks

Asphalt bruises, wood shakes split along the grain, and metal roofing dents. Whatever you’ve got up there, the inspection is the same: walk it, touch it, photograph it.

When Does Hail Hit the Wasatch Front?

Utah doesn’t have a Plains-style hail season. Our hail rides in with the summer monsoon pattern — roughly July through August — in fast, localized thunderstorms that can pound one neighborhood and skip the next. It’s smaller and more localized than what “Hail Alley” states see, but it’s real, and it reaches the valley floor.

The public record for these storms is NOAA’s NCEI Storm Events Database, which logs hail and wind events by county and date from National Weather Service reports. And because Utah’s summer cells often bring gusts along with the stones, hail and wind damage frequently show up on the same roof — here’s what wind damage looks like if your storm brought both.

How We Inspect and Document Hail Damage

  1. Free inspection. We walk the roof — every slope, every penetration — not a drive-by glance from the truck. Call (385) 424-8810 or book online in two minutes.
  2. Photograph everything. Every impact point, slope by slope, plus the dented vents, flashing, and gutters that back up what the shingles show.
  3. Written findings you own. A plain-English summary of what we found and where. We inspect your roof and document storm damage for your records, so you can file with your insurer. We’re roofers, not insurance agents — you and your insurer handle the claim.
  4. Written estimate. You will see the full scope and price before any work begins.
  5. Repair, cleanup, warranty. We fix it, haul off the mess, and back the work with our workmanship warranty.

Repair or Replacement After Hail?

Isolated bruising on one slope usually means a straightforward repair. Widespread mat fracture across multiple slopes is a different conversation — patching a roof that’s compromised everywhere wastes your money, and we’ll say so. Compare your options on our roof replacement page. And if your roof is simply aging or leaking without any storm behind it, that’s regular roof repair — different problem, same crew.

What Hail Repair Costs in Utah

Repair cost depends entirely on how much of the roof took damage — a few bruised shingles on one slope is a very different job from widespread damage across the whole roof, so we won’t guess a number over the phone. The inspection is free, and you get a written estimate laying out the full scope and price before any work begins.

Hail Damage FAQs

How can I tell if hail actually damaged my roof?

From the ground, you often can’t. Look for granules piled in gutters and downspouts, dents in vent caps or gutters, and dark spots on shingles — but the only sure way is a walk-the-roof inspection with touch-testing for bruises. Ours is free, and if there’s nothing wrong, we’ll say so.

What size hail damages shingles?

Industry research puts the general threshold for visible impact marks on standard shingles around 1 inch — quarter-size — with cracking of the shingle mat more likely at 1.25 inches and up. Smaller hail rarely causes functional damage right away, though it can still age a roof faster over time.

Is the inspection really free?

Yes — completely free, no obligation. If your roof took no real damage, we tell you that and you’re done. No bill, no pitch.

How soon after a hailstorm should I get inspected?

The sooner the better — fresh marks are easiest to spot before rain washes the loose granules off and the spots weather in. A bruised shingle also sheds water poorly, so every storm that follows works on the same weak points. And it’s safer to have a trained inspector on your roof than you on a ladder.

Do you repair hail-dented vents and flashing too?

Yes. Dented vent caps, damaged flashing, and beat-up gutters get photographed in the same inspection and included in the same repair — one crew, one visit, one warranty on the workmanship.
