Heber Valley Snow Load Standards and Ice Dam Prevention

Heber’s Building Safety Division lists the ground snow load as “Varies on Address,” and its design criteria point every site to the Utah State University calculator. From downtown to Timber Lakes, the load nearly triples.

Ground Snow Load Rises with Elevation

60 psf
City Hall 5,599 ft
65 psf
North Heber 5,781 ft
72 psf
89 psf
136 psf
Annexed hills 7,475 ft
160 psf
Timber Lakes 7,891 ft

USU calculator readings. Tile, a second layer, or solar gets a framing check against your address before we recommend it.

Four Winter Numbers That Shape a Heber Roof

6B

Climate zone. The city’s design table requires ice barrier and lists a 4°F design temperature, climate zone 6B. We run ice barrier up from every eave.

1 in

Attic air gap. The city’s eave-venting handout calls for a 1-inch gap with baffles and screened soffit vents, which keeps snow from melting and refreezing at the edge.

26 in

Snow in one day. A spotter measured 26 inches on January 2, 2023, before snow collapsed a canopy on 900 South Main. Low-slope porches deserve a check after big storms.

40°F

Shingle seal temperature. GAF guidance for shingles to seal. We schedule replacements around the weather and hand-seal cold-season repairs.

5 stars for Rooval Roofing! After wind and hail damage, the overall claims and replacement process took over a year to get approved and finalized. Initially, the first inspector said the roof WOULD need to be replaced, then the insurance company DENIED the claim, I pushed back and the insurance company had an engineer come out from California to confirm that it DID NOT need to be replaced. After pushing hard, they approved a SMALL portion of the roof. That was NOT good enough and it was NOT right. Rooval worked through it with with me and the insurance company and eventually the insurance company approved the FULL replacement. The process took well over a year and it wasn't easily dealing with the insurance company, but with persistence and time, we were able to get what they owed me. Rooval Roofing was incredibly patient, communicative, and supportive every step of the way. Once everything was cleared, their crew did a fantastic job installing the new roof. The roof looks incredible, and I wouldn’t hesitate to hire them again. Highly recommended!

I made several calls before finding a roofer who would even talk to me about repairing a slate roof. Slate is not that common here, so I was a little dubious about their enthusiasm. However they knew exactly what they were doing and made the repairs quickly and professionally.

We had a roof leak and Matt was quick to respond and came out the next morning. He didn't try to pitch a whole roof replacement or anything he didn't think was necessary and the pricing was fair. I would recommend Rooval for a quick inspection/repair.

I was quite impressed with Matthew. He sent me a text to let me know he was on his way and he was actually on my doorstep probably less than one hour after I contacted them. We had a mystery roof leak that was dripping water through a can light in our hallway each time we've had a downpour of heavy rain. He quickly diagnosed the problem, made the repairs, checked in my attic for residual moisture, and left me with a warranty, and all was done in probably less than a couple of hours. He was very personable and pleasant to work with. I have confidence I don't need to worry anymore whenever we get a heavy rainstorm!

Most Heber ice dams occur when warm attic air melts snow on the roof, which then refreezes over the cold eaves. Our free inspection checks your intake vents, baffles, and insulation to stop leaks before winter starts.

Understanding Roof Replacement Costs in Heber City, UT

A small rambler near Main Street and a custom home on the mountain bench have very different project costs. Four main factors determine the final price:

Size, Pitch, and Height

Steeper slopes, second stories, and complex roof layouts require more material, safety equipment, and labor time.

Address Snow Load Requirements

High-elevation snow loads can require thicker wood decking and structural framing reinforcement before installation.

Material and Community Rules

Shingles, metal, and tile have different material costs. Local HOAs may also restrict your material choices.

Deck Damage and Layer Removal

Tearing off multiple layers adds labor and disposal fees. Soft or water-damaged decking is replaced and billed per sheet.

We measure your roof and inspect your structure in person. You receive an itemized quote immediately following your free inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions About Roofing in Heber City

Do you handle roof repairs in Heber City, or only full replacements?

We handle both. Many of our Heber service calls are targeted repairs: fixing an eave leak, replacing a pipe boot, or securing shingles lifted by wind. We find the source of the leak and tell you honestly how many years your roof has left. Call (385) 424-8810 or book a free inspection online.

It depends on your address and elevation. City Hall downtown requires 60 pounds per square foot (psf). Red Ledges ranges from 72 to 89 psf. The annexed hills on the north and east edges reach 136 psf. We look up the exact USU calculator number for your home during the inspection.

Permits depend on the scope of work. We verify whether your project requires one. Heber reviews permits online and performs inspections Monday through Thursday. High-temperature ice barrier is required by city code, so we install it on every re-roof whether a permit is required or not.

It may be. In September 2026, Heber City expanded its Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) map north of the Wasatch Canal along U.S. 40. New construction must meet fire-resistant standards, while existing homes are grandfathered. The Wasatch Fire District provides home hazard assessments, and we check your address against the city map before recommending materials.

Under Utah’s wildland-urban interface code, replacing 25% or more of a roof within 12 months requires the entire new roof to meet new-construction fire standards. This applies to homes inside mapped wildfire zones. We check your address before quoting a partial repair.

Timber Lakes Estates allows fiberglass asphalt shingles, aluminum shingles, or painted steel. The community requires earth-tone colors and a minimum 4:12 roof pitch. Snow loads here average 160 pounds per square foot, so we engineer the deck and fasteners to support that weight.

Yes, when temperatures permit. Shingle manufacturers like GAF require 40°F or warmer for shingle adhesive strips to seal. Because Heber winters are cold, we schedule full replacements during warmer weather breaks. If an emergency repair cannot wait, we hand-seal shingles with cold-weather adhesive. Active leaks receive a temporary, watertight seal until conditions warm up.

Yes. On August 12, 2024, weather observers recorded 1-inch hail in Heber City, which led to local insurance roof claims. Hail that size can fracture the underlying fiberglass mat without showing obvious surface marks from the ground. On September 17, 2026, 1.5-inch hail fell in nearby Midway.

Yes, but install the roof first. Removing and reinstalling solar panels during a future roof replacement adds thousands to your total cost. Rooftop solar in Heber requires approval from Heber Light & Power, and its northern circuit is currently at capacity. Verify your grid access before purchasing solar panels.

No. The National Historic District under review for downtown Heber will not add property restrictions. It allows owners of qualifying historic homes to apply for preservation tax credits. We match original roof profiles on older red-brick homes and provide dated photos to support your tax credit filings.

Call (385) 424-8810 immediately. Do not climb onto the roof, especially in freezing weather. If water appears along an exterior wall in winter, it is likely caused by an ice dam. Do not chip at the ice with sharp tools, as this damages the shingles beneath. Move furniture, place a container under the drip, take photos of the interior leak, and call us to locate the entry point.

Yes. We serve Heber City, Midway, Charleston, Daniel, Hideout, and Timber Lakes. Our shop is in Lehi, about 50 minutes away via Provo Canyon. Every project begins with the same free, photo-documented inspection. Call (385) 424-8810 to schedule.

Request an inspection online or call (385) 424-8810. We check the roof exterior and attic, take dated photos of any wear, verify the snow load for your address, and give you a straightforward recommendation for repair or replacement. The photos are yours to keep.
